Types of Lamps
All lamps can be divided into eight basic types:

1. Standard Incandescent
2. Tungsten Halogen
3. Fluorescent
4. High Pressure Sodium
5. Metal Halide
6. Mercury
7. Low Pressure Sodium
8. Induction

Distinguishing characteristics of each lamp type vary somewhat. It is best to examine lamp characteristics by type of lamp.

Lamp Identification

LAMP CHARACTERISTICS
Identifying a lamp is much like identifying a person; both have specific characteristics we can recognise. Most lamps have ten characteristics that will identify a specific lamp:

1. The type of lamp e.g. Tungsten Halogen, Metal Halide etc.
2. The configuration and size of the cap.
3. The watts of power it consumes.
4. The voltage for which it is designed to operate.
5. The shape of the lamp.
6. The lamp's diameter.
7. The length of the lamp.
8. The finish of the lamp.
9. The amount of light, or lumens, the lamp will produce.
10. The life expectancy of the lamp.
